Left Foot Charley Winery & Tasting Room [Winery], 806 Red Drive, Village at Grand Traverse Commons, Traverse City, MI 49684, Phone: (800) 515-1081. Tasting Room Opening July 2007. Left Foot Charley is a relatively new winery in the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Owner/winemaker Bryan Ulbrich has spent the last decade feeding an obsession around Northern Michigan's fantastic white wines. In that time he has crafted some of the most acclaimed wines East of that other Left Coast - you know they call it Cali-something- they grow great avocados there. Anyway...in 2004, he helped rejuvenate a friend's struggling Riesling vineyard and created 200 cases of his first wine under the LFC label. He and his wife Jennifer are in the midst of creating Northern Michigan's first urban winery in the center of the historic Northern Michigan Asylum now known as The Village. Ulbrich is quietly gathering the region's top small vineyards and will showcase them in the new facility. Left Foot Charley = Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Gewurztraminer from Northern Michigan's finest vineyards. Why are we focusing on Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Gewurztraminer? Because they thrive in Northern Michigan. We are working with the area's most significant small vineyards, ranging in size from 1-6 acres. We believe that this quartet of grapes exemplify why Northern Michigan is a world class wine growing region.
